    History

    Long, Long, Ago....

    Early 1881 -- Some progressive farmers of Norfolk County Decided they should investigate "whether it be expedient" to establish a fire insurance company. The end result -- The Norfolk County Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

    May 27, 1881 -- A note was placed in the Simcoe Reformer inviting the free holders of Norfolk County to a meeting in the Mechanics Institute to see if it was necessary to set up a fire insurance company "in the County of Norfolk on the mutual principle". It was agreed that an insurance company "was expedient" and that a subscription book be opened up to accept signatures of "owners of property moveable or immoveable".

    Dec. 16, 1881 -- Oliver Austin was elected President with William Dawson as Vice-President. William Roberts, Secretary and Samuel Potts, Treasurer. R.M. Wilson, Inspector. Office was in the Mechanics Institute, 58 Peel St., Simcoe, Ontario.

    1888 -- Moved to where Old Mud Church used to be Southwest corner of Colborne and Young Streets (Simcoe).

    July 1960 -- Moved to 31 - 33 Peel Street, Simcoe.

    1968 -- Moved to 23 Robinson Street, Simcoe.

    Feb. 27, 1971 -- Norfolk County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company made application to the province to change its name to the Norfolk Mutual fire Insurance Company.

    May 15, 1974 -- Moved office to 26 Colborne St., North, Simcoe.

    April 16, 1981 -- Moved office to 37 Kent Street, South, Simcoe.

    January 30, 1982 -- The Company's centennial date - exactly one hundred years after incorporation.

    1988 -- Motion made (and passed) that "fire" be dropped from the company name to become Norfolk Mutual Insurance Company.

    October 1996 -- Construction on new building (beside Bingorama on Park Road in Simcoe) scheduled to begin.

    May 1, 1997 -- New Home of Norfolk Mutual - 33 Park Road, Simcoe.
