If you suspect
you are a victim of Identity Theft please refer to the following:
q
Report the crime to
the local police as soon as possible. Be sure to obtain a copy of the police
report for future reference. Also notify the RCMP phonebuster unit at
1-888-495-8501.
q
Notify all creditors
and financial institutions with which you have dealings – such as Banks, Credit
Card Companies, Utilities, Lending Firms, and Retailers etc.
q
Be cautious of hiring
a “credit repair” firm prior to checking with the Better Business as to their
legitimacy.
q
Cancel your credit
cards and have new cards issued. Explain in detail the reasons for this and
inquire about accounts opened fraudulently in your name.
q
Cancel all ATM cards
and have a new one with a new PIN numbers issued.
q
Destroy your cheque
books and have new and different cheques issued.
q
Cancel any telephone
calling cards.
q
Follow up with Canada
Post in the event you think your mail is being tampered with or diverted.
q
Follow up with your
local land registry office to confirm ownership of your property and whether
your identity has been used to register other properties.
q
Obtain a new driver’s
license and health card. Advise both the MTO and Ministry of Health of the
reasons you require new cards.
q
Obtain a credit
report and have it noted to reflect an ID Fraud Occurrence. Follow up with a
further report to insure your ID isn’t being used again.
q
Obtain a new birth
certificate if necessary.
q
Obtain a new Canadian
passport, Status Card, Canadian Citizenship Certificate, Immigration Record of
Landing or Permanent Resident Card if necessary, by visiting the Ontario
Government site:
www.gov.on.ca and follow the Identity Theft links.
q
Change your password
on all accounts where a password is required.
q

Keep a log of the
